The Budget Ant DESC has been developed to provide an affordable and robust drive ESC option for Repeat Drive Brushed or any other antweight size drive motor. To address the lack of high-quality budget ESC options available for antweight robots, I searched for and evaluated multiple potential ESC sources. The result? Repeat Robotics Budget Ant DESC. This is a customized Payne dual brushed ESC configured for an optimal driving experience, including onboard mixing, center braking, and pre-soldered connectors for signal and power.  It’s the perfect option for your next brushed drive antweight robot!

Description

WARNING: Repeat Drive Brushed motors operated at 4S CANNOT be stalled for an extended period! The motor will overheat and let out smoke, sustaining permanent damage. These ESCs do not have active current limiting, so if the motor is stalled until failure, the FET driving that motor will also fail, permanently damaging the ESC. If this occurs, you will have to replace both the brushed motor and the ESC.

Testing showed that the ESC and motor can be damaged when stalling for as little as 7 seconds on 4S and 25 seconds on 3S. In every test case, the motor smoked first and stopped working before the ESC failed.

Great ESC, performed well under the stress of the Garden State Antweight division.
Ran paired with Repeat Brushed motors.

Great product that takes a lot of the guess work out of wiring an ant weight combat robot. Onboard mixing option is friendly for beginners and easy to turn off if you have your own already set up. I ran it in a few matches where I got the snot beaten out of me and held up well!

  3. Bob Belansen

TLDR, the voltage and current ratings are honest, it’s a great value for money, and it’s a good ESC for most antweight bots.
Note: I was given an ESC as a beta tester. I tested it destructively, so conflict of interest is minimal.
I was not able to break it using a 3s lipo and repeat drive brushed, despite stalling the motors for extended periods of time. This being the standard configuration for an antweight robot, means that this ESC should be perfect for most bots.
When I tested it on 4s, with the same repeat drive brushed motors, under normal driving it worked flawlessly. I then stalled the motors and held it that way for ~30 seconds, at which point the ESC finally died. This is well outside the listed specs of the ESC (repeat brushed at stall on 4s draw 2.7ish amps and the ESC is rated for 2 amps continuous) but if your gearbox happens to lock up late in a match you won’t instantly burn out the ESC. The same cannot be said of the Scorpion Nano.
For the price, this ESC is very good. It handles much higher current than a Scorpion Nano with only a little more weight and at less than half the price. It’s a millimeter too big for my heavily minmaxed bot, so I’ll have to continue using the Nano, but this has me wishing I’d left a little more interior room.
Overall I’d recommend this ESC for anyone building an antweight robot with brushed drive and looking to save a couple of bucks.

We switched to repeat drives for more reliability and haven’t looked back. We are now excited to have the same reliable esc to match! Ran a 4s battery, two wheel drive bot (brushed repeats) with a 2600kv weapon motor – smooth operation. If you are tired of burning out other dual ESCs stop and make the switch. Thank you for always innovating the sport!

A bit bigger than some other dual ESCs but can’t be beat at its price. As bulletproof as Repeat Brushed.

  6. Adam

Fantastic ESC, have not had any problems and plan on using this for as long as I can. Unbeatable price and very straight forward to use.

  7. Keith Tam

Awesome! Now I don’t have to blow my money on way more expensive dual ESC options and get this ESC that works the same. This is going on all my brushed drivetrains, Ants AND Beetles. Thanks Peter!

This ESC is half the weight of the cheap Chinese one’s and 10x’s the quality. Also DUAL MOTOR! Did I mention Dual Motor? most ESC’s you have to purchase two of them for 1 drive system, and at this price its an absolute steal! Pair this ESC with Peter’s Repeat Drive motors and take your bot to the next level!
