An increasing amount of insect weight combat robots use plastic frame rails, these axles have a flanged section to keep them perpendicular to your frame and your drive running smooth.

These shafts are amazing! You can use these to create an indirect drive system where the wheels are mounted to these instead of directly on the motor, then the wheels are powered by a belt or tangential drive system. This means your wheels can take much more of a beating compared to ones mounted 3mm motor shaft.
I made a 4WD tangential drive control bot with these (Super Space Turtle), and a wheel took a direct hit. The screw holding the axle on bent, and the wheel was ripped off, but the axle did not bend and was reusable!
